# PRP side effects are usually local and short-lived

> PRP injection side effects for prp clinic Gilbert readers, including expected soreness, recovery, and urgent warning signs.

Are side effects from platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, serious? Reports most often describe brief soreness or swelling where the procedure was done. PRP comes from a blood sample separated into layers by a spinning machine. It contains more platelets, small cells that clump when a cut bleeds.

A hot joint, fever, or fast-growing swelling isn't routine. Those signs need prompt care.

## Pain or swelling may rise briefly after PRP

The needle, added fluid, and sore tissue can briefly increase pain or swelling. The ache may be sharper when the PRP has more white blood cells. Mild swelling often eases without more care.

Ask the clinic how much soreness is expected and whom to call after hours. Written directions help when the area hurts and details are easy to forget. Don't use the first few days to judge later relief.

Early soreness doesn't prove that repair has begun.

## PRP injection recovery time depends on the sore tissue

There isn't one dependable timetable for all body parts. A knee used for walking faces different demands than an elbow used for pickleball. The doctor can state how much walking, lifting, or exercise is safe for you at each stage.

Ask about driving and bathing before leaving the clinic. Find out when longer walks, heavier lifting, and normal chores can begin again. Also ask which rise in pain or swelling requires a call.

Recovery advice needs to match your body part and usual activity.

## Fever and lost strength need quick care

Call promptly when a joint becomes hot and puffy along with fever or illness. Spreading redness, drainage, or pain that worsens each day also deserves attention. Calf pain and swelling after less movement may mean a clot.

A pop followed by sudden weakness may mean a torn tendon. Trouble lifting the foot or controlling the bladder or bowels calls for urgent help. These problems aren't expected after PRP.

Report blood thinners, bleeding trouble, infection, and regular medicine before the procedure. Don't stop prescribed drugs because of anything read here.

1. A systematic review and meta-analysis of adverse events in randomized trials of intra-articular PRP for knee osteoarthritis found PRP associated with mild, transient adverse events - knee pain and swelling - that typically resolve without intervention, and more frequent with LEUKOCYTE-RICH formulations. Leukocyte-poor PRP had a safety profile similar to hyaluronic acid. Knee stiffness was more frequent with PRP than with normal saline (P=.031). No severe adverse events were reported in any group.

2. A Bayesian network meta-analysis of nine studies (six RCTs, 1055 patients) found leukocyte-POOR PRP produced significantly better WOMAC scores than hyaluronic acid (mean difference -21.14; 95% CI -39.63 to -2.65) and than placebo (-17.84; 95% CI -34.95 to -0.73), while leukocyte-RICH PRP showed no such significant difference versus placebo. PRP of either type caused more local adverse reactions than hyaluronic acid (OR 5.63; 95% CI 1.38-22.90), almost always local swelling and pain, with no difference in safety between the two PRP types.

3. PATH-2 randomised 230 adults with acute Achilles tendon rupture managed non-surgically to PRP or a placebo dry-needle injection across 19 UK hospitals, with a central laboratory confirming the PRP was of good quality with the expected growth-factor content. At 24 weeks there was no detectable difference in muscle-tendon function (limb symmetry index 34.7% versus 38.5%; adjusted mean difference -3.9%; 95% CI -10.5% to 2.7%) or in any secondary outcome or adverse-event rate.

4. A narrative review of PRP concluded that the literature suggests leukocyte-rich PRP is more beneficial in tendinopathies while pure (leukocyte-poor) PRP is more beneficial in cartilage pathology - but stated plainly that different PRP preparations have not been directly compared head-to-head in ANY pathology, and that the PRP type used is frequently not even stated in published research.

## If the soreness doesn't settle, call the clinic

At QC Kinetix (Chandler), medical providers are trained clinic staff who examine the sore area. They can review regenerative treatments with you, meaning non-surgical procedures carried out in the office. One option is PRP, which begins with a blood draw from you.

Have medicine names ready and name the sore spot. Ask which care fits the exam and what it costs. Also ask what comes after PRP if soreness remains. One number reaches the clinic: (602) 837-PAIN.
